The Day I Doubted My Blog

A few days ago I found this great blog post by Heather Reese on her blog It’s a Lovely Life called 5 Ways We Can All Stop Those Unhelpful Mom Debates Right Now. I loved it! I can relate in being judged and have felt I may have been judgmental in my own ways during the last 5 years of being a mom. I would like to let others know my opinion, not force my own upon anyone!

I started thinking about how my blog might come across. The title alone is enough to make me nervous now regarding this.  I would hate for anyone to think I am judging just by seeing it. The way God intended is referencing the way I believe He intended humanity to live. Meaning as natural as possible in day-to-day life. That He created women’s bodies to have children. That He created everything we need to live and survive already in natural forms to find here on our planet. And so many other aspects. And that is just the start…my About page plainly states it, but I will state it again: This is an informational blog to be used as a resource for others who are interested or have questions about natural living—basically, it is our experiences and “results” from our choice to live as naturally as possible.

To be clear, we understand that not everyone will agree and that these lifestyle choices are not always a viable option. There is a time and place for intervention, hospitals, doctors, western medicine and all that territory. I believe God gave us all those too. They are not to be disclaimed. They are just not our first choice. If we can find a natural way to do it (i.e. homeopathic, herbal, holistic, etc.) we will try that route first.

Here is a list of many things we have had the privilege to have done or be a part of regarding natural living.

Pregnancies, Birth and Children: prenatal care with a midwife through a birthing center for all pregnancies; midwife assisted home births, all water births; prenatal and pediatric chiropractic; breastfeeding; baby-wearing; cloth diapering (only our youngest); amber teething necklaces.

Health, Supplements and Medical: essential oils; herbal teas; herbal tinctures; natural antibiotics (colloidal silver, coconut oil, honey, etc.); natural healing and immunity support and function from food (lemons, herbs, garlic, apple cider vinegar, cranberries; oat, fennugreek, nuts and so on for lactation); homeopathic first aids; homemade tooth powder; homemade yogurt (pro-biotic digestion).

Other aspects that I have blogged about are resources that I also want to share my experiences with and include: Travel; sleep and co-sleep; getting involved in local activities (libraries and fall festivals); and I will hopefully soon post some blogs about our new adventures in Homeschooling….stay tuned!

My Resources and Networking page also has about six different links to people, places or products that I have had the privilege of interacting with. Check them out, too.

What about you? Had any experiences with judgmental people? Or any experience with natural living? I would love to hear any thoughts!

A couple of weekends ago on a Saturday we were exploring our local bay side beach. It is surrounded by beautiful trees, bushes, and foliage from a variety of plant life. During all the fun and joy, Miranda ended up getting some kind of insect bites on her foot and leg. They did not seem to be anything but itchy, so we just put some medicated anti-itch on it and let it be. Sunday the bites seemed a bit more pronounced and she complained again of the itching. Again with the medicated itch gel and letting it be.

By the afternoon of Monday, we knew there was a problem. She had

scratched all of the little puss-filled spots open and her foot had swelled to twice it’s size or so. Dad and I went into slight panic-mode. I dropped everything and went to the computer for homeopathic first aid options. While we monitored her for anaphylactic shock (because she has never had any swelling like this before) I found some options. After I put a paste of baking soda and honey on the bites I went and purchased Children’s Benadryl for just in case. This took maybe 15 for whole time I was gone. When I arrived home her foot looked soooo much better. Dad said that the swelling had almost immediately went down. We then proceeded to give her a small dose of the Benadryl and sent her to bed after dinner wearing a sock holding the honey-baking soda onto her foot and leg. Through out all of this

Miranda said she didn’t have any pain, just itchiness.

By the next day (Tuesday) the swelling was down but not much. So I gave her weak Calendula tea and continued with the honey-baking soda. Midday she complained that the itching was hard to deal with. So I switched to straight up fresh aloe vera like we use on our sunburns. The itching went away almost at once and the swelling went down a bit more as well. A bit more Benadryl that night with continued applications of the aloe vera and by Wednesday morning the swelling was down even more! The rest of that day she seemed fine and we just continued with the aloe vera and Thursday morning her foot seemed almost normal with slight swelling still around the bites. Two weeks later she is back to her normal self.

Here are the articles I found online for homeopathic first aids.

I found out about the aloe vera and calendula from this great article 9 Remedies for Insect Bites.  Super helpful!

I found out about Quercetin at MovePhysicalTherapy.com. It can reduce histamine in the body and is found naturally mainly in dark-red and blue fruits like cranberries, black plums, blueberries and cherries.

Vitamin A, vitamin C, flavanoids, bromelain (found in pineapple), are all helpful in taking down swelling from histamine reactions. LivingStrong.com has this great article about it.
